SPF 108: Setting Goals & Treasuring Christ

Goals are made because we treasure a particular outcome. Goals can be about finances, health, business, creating, writing - you name it. But today we are going to look at one goal that Paul had - the goal that treasured Christ above all.

Setting Goals

A goal is really just a desired outcome. And if we really treasure those outcomes, those goals, we will actually change our daily living.

Paul. He treasured Christ. Christ was His goal.

Philippians 3

If I could summarize Paul’s goal in life, what he treasured most, it would be Philipains 3:10 “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and may share in His sufferings, becoming like him in his death - and then in vs 14 to press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Jesus Christ.

Paul’s goal in life what Christ. Not to be Christ, the Savior, but to know him and share in His sufferings, that He might attain the prize of being with Him for all eternity.

Whatever he could have gained from his own education, his own heritage, his own position in the temple among the Pharisees, whatever he could gain from his own works, his own life, he considered it nothing, that He may gain Christ and be found in Him.

If we treasure Jesus, if our goal is to win the prize, as Paul says, to be found in Christ when our day on earth is done, IT WILL SHAPE OUR LIVING.

Treasuring Christ

For the Christian, our number one goal should be a life that revolves around Christ. That He would be at the center of all we do.

To Live is Christ

Philippians 1

Ways we can see how Jesus impacts our daily living when He is our number 1 goal!

  1. Christ will be honored in our bodies whether we live or die.

  2. We faithfully labor for the progress and joy in the faith for others

  3. We live our lives in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  4. For the sake of Christ we believe in Him and we suffer for Him and engage in the conflict

______ is LIFE

There are these tag lines that circulate - I’ve seen them on t-shirts, memes, maybe bumper stickers - but BLANK is life - like oils are life; running is life; food is life; football is life; brunch is life.

What that translates to is - all we do revolves around that thing. It’s what is treasured.

Maybe there’s something that you are treasuring more than Christ, Maybe there is something your life is revolving around that is your center and it’s not your Savior.

Repent.
Believe that God has saved you from your sin and now you can live for Him.

Ask Him to help you treasure Christ above all things. Will it be this perfect treasuring never to treasure anything else? No. We will sin again. Probably in a few minutes, if you’re like me. But that’s how amazing God’s grace is. This is the sanctifying process of this life. That we would love God more and more every day.

Tis the season to be joyful right? But no matter how festive the traditions, or fluffy the snow, or twinkly the lights, Christians sentiments just won’t get us there. Today we are going to talk about where to find complete joy and how to make our home in Christ.

JOY. Complete Joy!

Joy is something at Christmas time that many people think can be attend by the sentiments of the season. But the sentiments will never lead to complete Joy.

John 15:1-11

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

Joy is not found in sentiment. It is not found in traditions. It is not found under a tree.

True joy is found in Jesus Christ - and how do we partake of this true joy?

Like a branch abiding in a vine, we abide in Christ.

Abide In Christ

Abide means to remain, to dwell - so much so that we make our home there. jesus tells us to abide in Him, to make our home in Him. Remain there. Live there. Why? Because apart from Him we can do nothing! Apart from him there is not complete joy. Apart from Him the Father is not glorified.

Abidingit is only made possible by Jesus Christ himself! Abiding in Christ is made possible through regeneration. When we are saved by the grace of Jesus Christ we can now abide in Him. vs 3 tells us that we are already clean;  we were once so dirty from sin and unattached to Christ, that it was impossible to bear fruit; but we have been cleansed by the Blood of Christ, we are now in Him and we are now fitted and ready to bear fruit.

But there are concrete realities to abiding in Christ which is where there is complete joy.

  • One of the ways we continue in Christ is in verse 7 which is letting His words abide in us. the word of Christ should dwell in us richly like it says in Colossians 3:16.

  • Jesus tells us to abide in His love - we are to rest our lives on the love Christ has for us

  • Another way to abide in Christ is to obey Him. Vs 10 says IF You keep my commands you will abide in my love.

The complete joy of Jesus Christ is found in abiding in HIm.

We first get it at our regeneration in Christ.

And then it is maintained through abiding in Christ daily.

Maybe you can think through this list and try one this week:

  • Read the Word and let it dwell in you richly - read, study, sing it, memorize it

  • Obey the Lord - know His commands and walk in them faithfully - by His grace we obey - He is at work in us as we are humble

  • Fellowship with one another - Scripture is clear that we are to not give up meeting together; be with other believers in church and in fellowship

  • Grow in the knowledge of God’s love for you.

“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” Galatians 4:4-5

The Genealogy of Christ

The first verse in Matthew 1 is

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”

In Greek it says something more along the lines of:

Bible of the Genesis of Jesus Christ.

or

This is the book of the beginning of Jesus Christ.

Genesis, the first book of the Bible starts with how God brought about the world and mankind, and Matthew, the first book of the New Testament starts with how God brought about the birth of Jesus through a whole family history.

That history was God at work from the beginning to bring about his promises.

5 ways the genealogy of Christ matters

  1. The genealogy of Jesus shows that Jesus came into a fallen world

  2. The genealogy of Jesus shows that Jesus came to save Jews and Gentiles

  3. Jesus’ genealogy is traced back 4,000 years to Adam

    1. 1 corinithans 15:45 Romans 5:12-18

  4. Jesus’ genealogy is traced to Abraham, Issac, and Jacob

  5. Jesus’ Genealogy is traced to King David

    1. 2 Samuel 7:12-13 Isaiah 9

The Genealogy of Christ tells meaning of Christmas

First - it means that God keeps His promises.

  • God made big promises to bring about a Savior, a Messiah that would deliver people from their sins, and a King who would reign forever

  • We can see how God preserved a line of people throughout history to fulfill His promises

  • When we read name after name after name in Scripture, we are reading God’s faithfulness. He is faithful to do what He said He would do.

Second, the Genealogy of Christ means that the Light of the World has come.

  • The openings of Matthew and Luke show us that indeed the Light of the Word has come  into the darkness to bring light and life to our hearts.

  • John 8:12 [ I Am the Light of the World ] Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

here ya go!

The First Two Things to Go in Abudance

Reading: Deuteronomy 8:1-18

When we are blessed. When we are fat and happy, the first two things that go:

  1. Remember the commands of God

  2. Remember to thank God

“Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day” Deuteronomy 8:17-18

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” James 1:17

History is Important

Part of remembering what God has done and giving Him thanks for His mighty hand and work means more than the happenings in our lives, or even in our current time.

God’s history equals more praise for Him.

Application

How do we prove faithful in times of abundance or need:

Treat them the same. Both meant for our good.

Read God’s Word and obey His commands

Remember what God has done and give thanks for His blessings.

Trivia Answer Key

The Work of Gratitude

One of the ways we can prove faithful as Christian women, wives, and mothers, is to be grateful.

In fact, grateful really means Christian - we are to be thankful, ready to show our appreciation for God and return to him good works that bring glory to such a gracious and good God

I head author Rebecca Merkle say that Gratitude is uniquely Christian because of our God.

Being thankful is a most important spiritual work!

Think about our natural selves, the flesh. It is easy to complain. It is easy to grumble. It is easy to find the negative.

It takes work - it takes an active resistance against our flesh to stop and give praise instead of complain and grumble.

Gratitude is such an important work!

Think about this when a society turns and slides into darkness:

Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

  • They did not honor God as God

  • They did not give thanks to God

For the child of God there is no limit to gratitude.

Gratitude does Three Things:

  1. Gratitude acknowledges God.

  2. Gratitude keeps our hearts humble.

  3. Gratitude changes our perspective.

When we are thankful we are very clear that we are not God. That God is Sovereign and at work and is gracious and merciful and gives good gifts to HIs children.

We may not be able to change our circumstances, but an eye for thankfulness will put our hope in the Eternal God.

One Way to Learn Gratitude

Read the Bible and read it with the right perspective.

The Bible is about God.

Rejoice at the truth we read!

Scripture Reading: Genesis 19 God Rescues Lot

Romans 8

We have committed treason against God - we have rebelled against the Sovereign and we deserve death.

Yet, God in His mercy, God in His loving kindness, God is His goodness, sent His Son Jesus to be sin for us, that we might be forgiven. The one who knew no sin became sin. The innocent one took the blame. He was crushed for our inequity. The punishment that brought us peace was upon HIM.

May not and ought not the children of these fathers rightly say: “Our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean, and were ready to perish in this wilderness but they cried unto the Lord, and He heard their voice, and looked on their adversity. Let them therefore praise the Lord, because He is good, and His mercies endure forever. Yea, let them which have been redeemed of the Lord, shew how He hath delivered them from the hand of the oppressor. When they wandered in the; desert wilderness out of the way, and found no city to dwell in, both hungry, and thirsty, their soul was overwhelmed in them. Let them confess before the Lord His loving kindness, and His wonderful works before the sons of men.
— William Bradford, Of Plymouth Plantation
According to the diary of Pilgrim Governor William Bradford, Squanto “became a special instrument sent of God for [our] good . . . Acknowledging God and Deep Joy

When we acknowledge God in His Godness, it leads our heart to worship. God has the words of life! Let us come to Him!

Five ways that a person does not acknowledge God:

Romans 1:28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

“They stood in judgement of God and found Him unworthy to be acknowledged.”

When a person does not see fit to acknowledge God it looks like:

  1. denial of calling sin a sin

  2. twisting the Word of God

  3. Avoiding the Word of God altogether

  4. Adding and taking away from the Gospel

  5. Coming up with a better way

This is such a thorough picture of someone who does not acknowledge God - for someone who finds God and His Word unworthy of being acknowledged and obeyed.

The amazing thing is, regardless of what any human thinks about about God, God is untouched by our thoughts and opinions. God is God and God reigns.

Four Ways we Can Acknowledge God:

A right view of God will lead to a potent worship of God - an acknowledging worship

A right view of God will lead to a heart and mind that acknowledges God as God and gives Him praise and thanks.

  1. Acknowledge that God reigns

  2. Acknowledge the holiness of God

  3. Acknowledge His commands

  4. Acknowledge God by giving thanks

“Holiness is wild. Holiness is three tornadoes in a row. Holiness is a series of black thunderheads coming in off the bay. Holiness is impolite. Holiness is the kind of darkness to make a sinful man tremble. Holiness beckons us to that darkness, where we do not meet ghouls and ghosts, but rather the righteousness of God—black righteousness. Holiness is a consuming fire. Holiness melts the world. And when we fear and worship a God like this, what is the result? Gladness of heart. Zion heard, and was glad (v. 8).” Pastor Doug Wilson from sermon on Psalm 97

“O Lord, you will ordain peace for us, for you have indeed done for us all our works.” Isaiah 26:12

Keep giving thanks. It is befitting for the Christian. It lifts our eyes and our hopes.

Born Katherina Von Bora in January 29, 1499

Married Martin Luther in June 15, 1525

Popes and Feminists - How the Reformation Frees Women from Feminism by Elise Crapuchettes

Radiant - 50 Remarkable Women in Church History by Richard Hannula

THREE THINGS we can learn from Katie Luther:

  1. Katie was the mistress of her domain

Being the Mistress of the domain is GROUND LEVEL foundational work - it is critical to operation of LIFE. Katie’s care of the home and her commitment to God served to propel the theological work of Martin Luther and today when we read our Bibles in our own Language we can think of a woman who faithfully made the way for her husband to preach and teach and REFORM.

  2. Katie engaged in theology

While Katie served in her home she was also engaging in theology and the reform with Martin and his guests. Katie was spiritually inquisitive and a critical thinker. She would ask her questions to Luther and also be involved in their Table Talk discussions.

  3. Katie was not a victim - she was committed to the Lord

Reformation women - their thoughts were not “let me see how I can advance the cause of women or any special victimized class - it’s how can I advance the gospel and make the Gospel of Jesus Christ known?” Elise Crapuchettes - Sheologians

Notes and Scripture from the Podcast

Masculinity and Femininity

“God is the only one that should define anything. God defines everything.

We must submit to the standard that God set forth in His Word.

There we will find definitions and what is right and wrong; we will find clarity and a guide for our feelings.

Man and Woman Catechism for Young Men and Women

What does a man say? Grrrr - sound of strength

Who does a man follow? God

What does a man do? He leads

Man verse: 1 Corinthians 16:13

What does a woman say? Welcome!

Who does a woman follow? God and her man?

What does a woman do? She helps.

Woman verse: Proverbs 31:30

Not exclusive to a man or woman, but priorities.

“Act like men” means there is a biblical way that men are to act.

“Words mean things and ideas have consequences.”

“Each culture needs to, with biblical principles, express masculinity and femininity in a godly way.”

MEN - What is Masculine?

  • need to be strong

  • need to protect

  • go out and provide

  • husbands are the head of the home (authority) Ephesians 5:23-28

  • Headship

  • Authority in the home - 1 Corinthians 11:3

  • Authority exists to BUILD UP not destruction 2 Corinthians - this benefits the family

  • Ephesians 5 paints the picture of masculinity in authority in the home - sacrifice and responsibility and authority

  • takes responsibility for the whole family

  • responsible for washing wive in the Word

  • takes initiative

WOMEN - What is Feminine?

  • strength comes out of femininity, not trying to be like a man

  • nurturers

  • wives are submissive to their OWN husbands (as to the Lord) Ephesians 5:23-28

  • Help-ship - woman given to man to help!

  • Active submission - doing it on purpose; an attitude and posture toward our husband

  • Husband should have full trust in her (Proverbs 31)

  • Attitude of gratefulness

Feminism

If you look at culture, feminism is a desire for women to be like men, not be more feminine.

Feminism sees an oppressor and oppressed relationship - cultural marxism

The “oppressed” in the feminist mind is women; women are always oppressed by men and the only way to be free from oppression is to take over men. They do this by taking over men’s roles.

Christian idea of progress and trajectory is restoring back of God’s definitions.

Feminists want to redefine masculinity as femininity.

Soft Men

1 Corinthians 6:9 - malakoi - softness, weakness = effeminate

If you can redefine something, you’ve already won the argument.

1 John 1:5 - walk in light; live out the Truth; gives fellowship with others; Jesus’ blood purifies us.

What are you doing, my son? What are you doing, son of my womb?
What are you doing, son of my vows?
Do not give your strength to women,
your ways to those who destroy kings.
— Proverbs 31:2-3
