SPF 148: How to Live Well in a Fallen World

There is so much going on right now all over the world. Liberties being stripped, people scared, documentaries coming out, judges being unconstitutional, conspiracy theories, corruption, the list goes on. One thing is for sure, the Word is fallen and we are living in it. How can we as Christians live well in a fallen world?

2 Corinthians 5:1-5

Groaning:

Scripture tells us that as believers we will groan with sorrow under the burden of life. “For wile we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened.”

Now without Christ, this would be a tragic life indeed.

But the groaning actually serves a great purpose. We groan that we would be further clothed and that what is mortal may be swallowed up by LIFE! By life!!

Truth No. 1

  • That we would groan and greatly look forward to being clothed in a glorified body

Joel Beeke in his family worship bible guide writes this instruction and encouragement: Meditate on the future realities of the Gospel. Have you learned by grace to groan to be clothed with a glorified body? Take time to consider all that awaits the children of God. If you have the Spirit all his is yours in earnest already.”

Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:25-26

2 Corinthians 5:6-11

Because Life awaits us, because we have the Spirit guaranteeing what God is preparing for us, we can have COURAGE.

Good courage.

Courage gives us the mindset to encounter danger and difficult times with a firmness, without fear or depression of spirits. We can approach them with valor, boldness, and resolution. We have fortitude, but a fortitude, as Webster’s 1828 dictionary says, implies patience to bear continued suffering.

Truth No. 2

  • To make it our aim to please God.

That word please means to be ambitious – think of all thing things you are ambitious about . . . is one of them pleasing God? And what a motivating factor – that we will appear before the judgement seat of Christ which Paul calls the “terror of the Lord” in the very next verse!

2 Corinthians 5:12-21

We no longer live for ourselves but for Christ who died for us and was raised!

Truth No. 3

  • Remember we are ministers of reconciliation.

Reconciliation means that there is a quarrel. Sin has made a breach and now there is separation between God and man. We need to remember all that Christ has done for us -reconciling us to God, not counting our trespasses, our rebellious acts against us, but forgiving us through His sacrifice.

We are God’s ambassadors for Christ. So we implore them – in light of God’s incredible mercy, in light of your limited time in the flesh, and in light of the coming terror of the Lord – be reconciled to God.

So in all of the groaning – look heavenward, please God, share Christ.

By all means, engage in this world. Stand up for what is right. But in all of this, may our ambition to please God and share Christ be under-girding it all.
