SPF 123: How to Avoid False Knowledge

No knowledge is neutral. There are things we learn that are raised up against the knowledge of God or those that promote the knowledge of God. So why does it matter and how can be more discerning to avoid false knowledge?

How to Avoid False Knowledge

There is nothing neutral. There are things we learn that are raised up against the knowledge of God or those that promote the knowledge of God.

This is freeing news the the Christian. Since there is no neutrality we can pick a side. And it doesn’t make us bigots or racist or challenged or put us in an echo chamber. This is the life of a Christian – to glorify God and enjoy Him forever and that means being aware of arguments of false knowledge, of empty philosophies that set themselves up against the Truth of our Reigning King.

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Romans 11:33-36 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

1 Timothy 6:20-21 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. Grace be with you.

Guard – For Timothy he need to have His eye locked on that Gospel; To keep watch – so that both he and his hearers would know the Truth. This is the same for us. Guard the Gospel that has been entrusted to us. Be able to know what is false and what is true. Keep a careful watch over this precious gift.

Avoid these two things:

  • Irreverent babble which Matthew Henry, a bible commentator Talks about irreverent babble being human eloquence which is human persuasive speaking and writing which often opposes the truth of God.

  • Contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge

There is knowledge out there that is false and opposed to the Truth. It contradicts what we read in the Word.

And what’s a good rule of thumb to know true science – Matthew Henry has a great filter: true science would approve of the gospel and consent to it.

All truth is God’s truth. Non Christians can know true things but truth things will never be opposed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ nor to Creator God and His plan.

This is where our faith hits the road because Christians must believer that there is one source of Truth and that is the Bible. That the Bible is breathed out by God, without error, living and active, and is the ONLY INFALLIBLE rule of faith and practice. As Got Questions says, “the Bible is God’s written revelation to mankind and is never superseded by man’s thoughts, ideas, writings, or visions.”

2 Timothy 2:15-20 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”

Ephesians 6:10-20 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
