SPF 207: The Truth About Modesty

Modesty is a hot topic in the Christian world, but often the heart of the issue is overlooked. Today I am sharing a biblical perspective on modesty that I never heard in youth group.

Modesty

Modesty is about worshipping and honoring God.

It’s honoring

⁃God’s commands

⁃God’s design

⁃Delighting in it all

God’s desire is that they would have this heart full of worship always that it might go well with them. A heart full of worship of God desires to honor the Lord and not self. This is a blessing and it goes well with this person and their descendants!

The problem is we often don’t believe God or are tempted to think there’s a better way. Self worship will deny the supremacy of God and fill us with excuses and lies that make our needs and desire paramount.

“We have to obey God regardless of the current fashions which surround us. God has commanded us to be outwardly as well as inwardly modest . . . and he actually never said that it’s because of the men. Frankly, that may not be the point at all – think of that very odd verse which tells us to wear our hair a certain way “because of the angels.” We may not actually be as in-the-know as we think we are regarding God’s greater purposes. God never gave us a “here’s why” argument on the modesty question – he just gave us a command. We don’t need to be modest “so that the men won’t sin” – we need to be modest so that WE’RE not in sin. We don’t need to be modest to please the Christian men (or women), we need to be modest to please God. So I think that as we pursue modesty, the biggest question should be whether God is pleased with our outfit, not whether we will cause anyone to stumble, or whose fault it will be if they do. The question is whether or not we are being faithful with what God has asked of us.” – Rebekah Merkle Femina blog

Modesty is more than dress – it’s also an attitude.

The woman Folly is loud; she is seductive and knows nothing. Proverbs 9:13

She seduces the simple that pass by and those who turn to her find death.

Immodesty in our actions which come out as loud, seductive, self pleasing, is a path to death.

“I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.” 1 Timothy 2:8-10

“Women who profess the Christian religion, must be modest in apparel, not affecting gaudiness, gaiety, or costliness. Good works are the best ornament; these are, in the sight of God, of great price. Modesty and neatness are more to be consulted in garments than elegance and fashion. And it would be well if the professors of serious godliness were wholly free from vanity in dress. They should spend more time and money in relieving the sick and distressed, than in decorating themselves and their children. To do this in a manner unsuitable to their rank in life, and their profession of godliness, is sinful. These are not trifles, but Divine commands. The best ornaments for professors of godliness, are good works.” – Matthew Henry
