Offended or Gracious?

Scripture gives us a way to process offensive words in a Christian way and come out cheerful, free and full of peace instead of stewing and full of bitterness.

what do we do when someone has asked or said something that’s offended us?

Let us be gracious.

We are gracious because the Lord has been gracious with us. If anyone needs grace it’s our own selves. Let us not forget the incredible grace poured out on the cross for us because of our sin. When we remember God’s grace, it helps us to be gracious to others.

It’s not that thoughtless or rude or insensitive comments aren’t a big deal but it’s how we handle them – there is a path that leads to bitterness and one the leads to freedom and peace. One involves holding a grudge and stewing… the other, grace and wisdom.

Bottom line – it’s easy to be offended, but it takes effort to be gracious.

When I was looking up the phrase “gracious words” I found that gracious words do a few things:

  1. They are honoring to God

  2. They bless people

  3. They influence for great good

First lets look at how gracious words are honoring to God:

Proverbs 15:26
The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD,
but gracious words are pure.

Second gracious words bless others:

Proverbs 16:24
Gracious words are like a honeycomb,
sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
Third gracious words influence for great good:

Proverbs 22:11
He who loves purity of heart,
and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.

Ecclesiastes 10:12
The words of a wise man’s mouth win him favor,
but the lips of a fool consume him.
