Sinners Gonna Sin

“Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ” Colossians 2:11

“For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Romans 7

What about those sins that we continually struggle with. Sometimes they are called besetting sin or sins, meaning that same sin is always so close.

Just because something is a besetting sin in our life does not mean it gives us permission to not address it, or go easy on it, or tuck it under a rug and pretend it’s nothing. It is an opportunity to continue to grow in the Lord, an opportunity lean into our freedom in Christ, and puts us at the throne of His grace continually.

So what do we do about sin in our lives?

No. 1: Take off the Old Self and Put on the New Self

We are to take off the old self, and put on the new self.

Colossians 3

The things listed here, are evil. And God calls us to put them to death. The Greek word, is neekroō nee-krah-o

Which means to deaden, to subdue, and to mortify.

Colossians 3: 12

So scripture does not instruct us just to put off the things of the sinful nature, but also put on the things that are fitting to the Christian because we are beloved by God and holy and chosen.

Matthew Henry commentary describes it as “we must not only put off anger and wrath, but we must put on compassion and kindness, not only cease to do evil, but learn to do well, not only not to hurt any, but do what good we can to all”.

No. 2 A few truths about putting off besetting sins.

1. Here’s the facts in 1 John – we still sin. But Christ purifies us.

2. We need to know and grow in the understand of what sin is and the gravity of it.

“Sin is something that stands in opposition to everything that God is in everything that he desires. This is enmity with God this is fighting against God’s purposes in our lives.” – Paul Washer

3. Being in the Scriptures is a grace to us – Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden you word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

4. Confess that sin to the Lord. Confession is agreeing with God that what we did or are doing is against what he is commanded we are acknowledging and agreeing that he is God and his commands are right and holy.

5. That God is a good God and scripture says he gives good gifts. Sin Is deceptive, Satan is a roaring lion looking to devour, he wants to steal kill and destroy. When we are tempted by sin we must remember that God is good and does not with all the good things from us.
