Chose the Lord

"So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mr Carmel. And Elijah came near to all the people and said, "How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him."

Commentator Matthew Henry writes that here "Elijah called on them to make a choice of WHO was the self-existent, supreme God, the Creator, Governor, judge of the world - and follow him alone. "

But in light of all the planning and thinking, and idea gathering, and admist all the goals and resolutions - Choose who you will serve.

Matthew Henry wrote this about Elijah confronting Ahab and the prophets of Baal - and all of Israel who were stradling the lines of worship:

"It is dangerous to halt between the service of God and the service of sin, the dominion of Christ and the dominion of our lusts. If Jesus be the only Savior, let us cleave to him alone for everything; if the Bible be the Word of God, let us reverence and receive the whole of it, and submit our understanding to the Divine teaching it contains."

If we choose God, we are choosing to submit to His ways; we are chosing to set our affections on him; we are choosing to ask the Spirit to identify places of self worship and root them out; we trust that Jesus is the only way to the Father; we put our faith in the Holy Word of God and submit to it's teachings.

β€œNow therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:14-15
